Aphrodisias is one of the oldest sacred sites in Turkey.  First dedicated to the ancient Mother Goddess and then the Greek Goddess Aphrodite, it was the site of a magnificent Temple of Aphrodite and the home of a famous marble sculpture school whose marble products were reknowned in the Roman World.

Tour Overview

Today, the Temple of Aphrodite is partially restored, and it is not hard to imagine its glory.  The Aphrodisias site also offers visitors ruins of a large theatre, a stadium and a museum, to name just a few.

Tour starts:  Pamukkale or Karahayit

Duration:  7 hours

• You will be picked up from your Karahayit or Pamukkale hotel, and then we will drive approximately 1.5 hours to Aphrodisias where we will commence our tour.  Sights we will see include:
• The Tetrapylon – a beautiful gateway which greeted pilgrims when they approached the Temple of Aphrodite
• The Stadium – which is one of the best preserved in the World and was specially designed for athletic events
• The Temple of Aphrodite, which was later turned into a Christian Basilica
• The Bouleterion (council chambers) which resembles a small theatre and was used for musical concerts as well as council meetings
• The North Agora – the public square
• The Hadrian Baths
• The Theatre, dating back to 27BC and later modified by the Romans for gladiatorial combat; the Sebasteion, the Temple of Emperors, famous for its life-size bas-reliefs

We conclude the tour with a visit to the Aphrodisias Museum which displays some of Aphrodisias’ famous marble sculptures as well as the statue of Aphrodite that stood in the temple.

Drop back to your hotel in Pamukkale or Karahayit.
